Overview

Japanese encephalitis vaccine, inactivated is a sterile vaccine produced by growing Japanese encephalitis (JE) virus (commonly Nakayama-NIH or SA14-14-2 strains) in cell culture (Vero cells) or mouse brains, followed by virus inactivation (usually via formaldehyde) and purification. It is designed to induce active immunity against Japanese encephalitis virus, a flavivirus transmitted by mosquitoes and endemic in Asia. The vaccine works by presenting inactivated virus particles to the immune system, stimulating a protective neutralizing antibody response that prevents disease upon exposure[1][3][4][5][6]. Major brand-name formulations include IXIARO (Valneva, Vero cell-derived) and JE-VAX (BIKEN, mouse brain-derived; no longer in US use). The vaccine is indicated for people aged 2 months and older, especially travelers or residents in endemic regions, and lab workers at risk[1][2][3][4][6]. Mechanistically, protection is conferred via induction of anti-Japanese encephalitis virus neutralizing antibodies. Not all inactivated JE vaccines are available in every region.
