Japanese encephalitis vaccine (live attenuated) is a biologic used to prevent Japanese encephalitis (JE), a severe mosquito-borne viral infection. The vaccine primarily exists in two forms: the **SA14-14-2** strain, which is a live attenuated virus generated by serial passage in primary hamster kidney cells, and the **ChimeriVax-JE** (IMOJEV) technology, which is a recombinant chimeric vaccine using a yellow fever virus (YF17D) backbone expressing the envelope and pre-membrane proteins of the Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV). Both formulations work by stimulating the immune system to produce neutralizing antibodies against the JEV envelope protein, providing high efficacy (over 99%) and long-term protection. It is widely administered in endemic regions, particularly across Asia, as a single subcutaneous dose in children and adults.
