Jessner's solution + trichloroacetic acid (TCA) is a combination chemical peel regimen used for the treatment of actinic keratoses. The procedure involves the sequential application of Jessner's solution—a mixture of salicylic acid, lactic acid, and resorcinol—followed by a 35% concentration of TCA. This combination acts as a medium-depth peel, penetrating through the epidermis into the papillary dermis. The mechanism of action involves the denaturation of proteins and keratolysis, leading to the destruction of precancerous keratinocytes and subsequent skin regeneration. Northwestern University has investigated this regimen in clinical trials as a cost-effective alternative to photodynamic therapy for treating actinic keratosis on the upper extremities.
