Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Kagocel + valacyclovir is a combination of two antiviral agents used primarily for the treatment of herpesvirus infections, including severe herpes simplex. Kagocel is a broad-spectrum antiviral that stimulates the synthesis of interferons (types I and II), proteins that enhance the body's immune response against viral infections. It is indicated for prevention and treatment of acute respiratory viral infections, influenza, and herpes in adults[1]. Valacyclovir is an oral nucleoside analog DNA polymerase inhibitor rapidly converted to acyclovir in the body; it inhibits viral DNA replication by competitive inhibition of viral DNA polymerase, incorporation into growing viral DNA chains causing chain termination, and inactivation of the enzyme[6][7][8]. Valacyclovir is widely used to treat herpes simplex virus (HSV) types 1 and 2, varicella-zoster virus (VZV), shingles, genital herpes, cold sores, and chickenpox[2][3][4]. The combination has been studied for enhanced efficacy compared to monotherapy with either agent alone in patients with severe or recurrent herpes simplex infection[5].
