Overview

Kaolin + pectin is a **combination oral medication** historically used for the **treatment of mild to moderate diarrhea** in humans and animals. Kaolin is a fine clay (hydrated aluminum silicate) that acts as an **adsorbent**, binding substances in the gastrointestinal tract, thereby reducing stool frequency and improving stool consistency. Pectin, a plant-derived polysaccharide, forms a gelatinous mass in the GI tract, enhancing the binding and bulk-forming effects. The combination works **locally in the gut**: kaolin adsorbs bacteria and toxins, while pectin soothes irritated intestinal mucosa and increases stool bulk. This combination does **not have intrinsic antibacterial activity** and is ineffective against infections with fever or bloody stool. The mechanism is non-systemic, with minimal absorption. The use of this combination for diarrhea in humans is **no longer FDA-approved in the US as of 2004**, but it is still found in veterinary products and some over-the-counter formulations in other regions[1][5][6][9].
