Overview

Ketofol is a pharmacological combination consisting of ketamine and propofol, typically mixed in a single syringe or infusion bag for intravenous administration. It is widely used for procedural sedation and the induction or maintenance of general anesthesia. The rationale behind the combination is to achieve a synergistic sedative and analgesic effect while mitigating the adverse hemodynamic and respiratory profiles of the individual components; ketamine's sympathomimetic properties help counteract propofol-induced hypotension, while propofol may reduce the incidence of ketamine-associated emergence delirium and vomiting. Recent clinical research, such as studies conducted by Cairo University, has explored its potential neuroprotective role in preventing postoperative delirium in high-risk elderly populations undergoing major oncological surgeries.
