Ketamine + thiopental is a combination of two intravenous anesthetic agents used together to induce general anesthesia. Ketamine is a dissociative anesthetic that acts primarily as an N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist, producing profound analgesia and dissociation while generally stimulating the cardiovascular system. Thiopental is an ultrashort-acting barbiturate that acts as a central nervous system depressant by enhancing gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) activity at the GABA-A receptor, leading to hypnosis and anesthesia but not analgesia. When combined, these drugs exhibit synergistic effects—prolonging anesthesia duration with lower individual doses and minimizing some adverse effects due to their complementary hemodynamic profiles. The combination has been shown in animal studies to provide longer-lasting anesthesia with improved hemodynamic stability compared to either drug alone[1][2][4]. This synergy allows for balanced anesthesia with reduced side effects such as oxidative stress or cardiovascular instability.
