Overview

Spasmofen is a fixed-dose combination rectal suppository containing ketoprofen (100 mg) and hyoscine butylbromide (10 mg). Ketoprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that provides analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting cyclooxygenase enzymes (COX-1 and COX-2), thereby reducing prostaglandin synthesis. Hyoscine butylbromide is an anticholinergic agent that acts as a muscarinic receptor antagonist, providing antispasmodic effects on smooth muscles in the gastrointestinal, biliary, and urinary tracts. Developed and manufactured by Amriya Pharmaceutical Industries, Spasmofen is primarily indicated for the rapid relief of severe colicky pain, particularly acute renal colic. Clinical studies have demonstrated its efficacy as a first-aid treatment, showing superior pain reduction compared to intravenous ketorolac in emergency settings.
