Overview

The killed bivalent (O1 and O139) whole cell oral cholera vaccine is an inactivated, orally administered vaccine composed of killed whole cells of *Vibrio cholerae* serogroups O1 and O139. It is designed to induce immunity against both major epidemic-causing serogroups of *V. cholerae* by stimulating the production of antibodies targeting the bacterial surface antigens, particularly the lipopolysaccharide components. The primary indication is for the prevention of cholera in endemic areas, during outbreaks, or humanitarian emergencies. The mechanism involves induction of immune responses—mainly vibriocidal antibodies—against *V. cholerae* surface antigens, providing protection against infection[1][4][7]. Several formulations exist under different brand names; these vaccines have been developed with support from international organizations such as IVI and are manufactured by companies including Shantha Biotechnics (Shanchol), EuBiologics (Euvichol/Euvichol-Plus), VaBiotech (mORC-Vax), and Incepta Vaccine Ltd[6]. WHO prequalification was achieved for Shanchol in 2011 and for Euvichol/Euvichol Plus subsequently[6][8].
