Overview

KLH-pulsed autologous dendritic cell vaccine is an investigational cellular immunotherapy developed by the Leo W. Jenkins Cancer Center. It consists of a patient's own dendritic cells that have been pulsed with keyhole limpet hemocyanin (KLH), a highly immunogenic carrier protein. The vaccine is designed to be administered via direct intratumoral injection, typically following treatments like radiation or gene therapy (e.g., TNFerade) that induce tumor cell apoptosis. This process is intended to allow the dendritic cells to capture released tumor antigens and present them to the immune system, with KLH serving as a potent adjuvant to prime and activate a systemic, T-cell-mediated anti-tumor response. A Phase II clinical trial evaluating this vaccine in patients with unresectable or metastatic pancreatic cancer was terminated due to poor recruitment.
