Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Krill oil + astaxanthin is a dietary supplement formulation containing two main bioactive components: **krill oil**, which is extracted from the Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) and is rich in omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (EPA and DHA), and **astaxanthin**, a potent antioxidant carotenoid typically derived from the microalga Haematococcus pluvialis or naturally present in krill. The omega-3 fatty acids in krill oil are primarily phospholipid-bound, which enhances their absorption and bioavailability compared to traditional fish oil. Astaxanthin provides strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects and is responsible for the red coloration of krill oil. This combination is often marketed for joint health, cardiovascular support, cognitive health, and reduction of inflammation. Mechanistically, EPA and DHA from krill oil act via anti-inflammatory and lipid-modifying effects, while astaxanthin provides cellular protection against oxidative damage by scavenging free radicals[1][2][3][5][6][7].
