Krypton Kr 81m is an approved radioactive diagnostic gas used primarily for pulmonary ventilation imaging. As a radioactive isotope of the noble gas krypton, it has an extremely short physical half-life of approximately 13.1 seconds, which allows for high-resolution imaging with minimal radiation exposure to the patient, as the gas is rapidly eliminated through exhalation. It is typically produced via a rubidium-81 (Rb-81) generator system. In clinical practice, it is often used in conjunction with pulmonary perfusion scintigraphy to diagnose pulmonary embolism and is also employed in the assessment of regional ventilation heterogeneity in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The agent can be administered as an inhaled gas or as an isotonic solution for continuous infusion in lung, myocardial, and cerebral perfusion studies.
