Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Argifem is a combination pharmaceutical and nutraceutical product containing the amino acid **L-arginine** and the antioxidant **proanthocyanidin**. It is primarily used in obstetrics to manage complications such as intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), pre-eclampsia, and oligohydramnios. L-arginine serves as a substrate for the enzyme nitric oxide synthase, leading to the production of nitric oxide, a potent vasodilator that improves uteroplacental blood flow and oxygen delivery to the fetus. Proanthocyanidin, a flavonoid typically derived from grape seed extract, acts as an antioxidant to scavenge reactive oxygen species and protect the vascular endothelium from oxidative stress. The product is commonly marketed in India as a sachet containing 3g of L-arginine and 75mg of proanthocyanidin for oral administration.
