Overview

L-carnosine + citalopram is a combination therapy consisting of L-carnosine, a naturally occurring dipeptide with antioxidant and neuroprotective properties, and citalopram, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressant. This combination has been studied as an adjunctive treatment for major depressive disorder (MDD). Clinical evidence suggests that adding L-carnosine (400 mg twice daily) to standard citalopram therapy (up to 40 mg/day) can significantly improve depressive symptoms compared to citalopram alone. The mechanism of action involves the serotonergic activity potentiated by citalopram through inhibition of serotonin reuptake in the central nervous system, while L-carnosine may exert neuroprotective effects possibly related to modulation of glutamate signaling and reduction of oxidative stress[1][5][6]. The combination appears well-tolerated with no significant increase in adverse effects over monotherapy[1][2].
