L-erythro-7,8-dihydrobiopterin is a naturally occurring pteridine derivative and the L-enantiomer of 7,8-dihydrobiopterin. It is an intermediate in the biosynthesis and recycling of tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4), a critical cofactor for aromatic amino acid hydroxylases involved in neurotransmitter synthesis (including dopamine, norepinephrine, epinephrine, and serotonin). L-erythro-7,8-dihydrobiopterin can act as an inhibitor of enzymes such as inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and tyrosine 3-monooxygenase. It is not approved as a pharmaceutical drug but has been used experimentally to study enzyme mechanisms related to neurotransmitter biosynthesis and nitric oxide production[6][4][9].
