L-NMMA + sodium nitrite is an experimental combination of two small molecules with opposing effects on the nitric oxide (NO) pathway. L-NMMA (NG-monomethyl-L-arginine) is a competitive inhibitor of nitric oxide synthase (NOS), thereby reducing endogenous NO production[5][7]. Sodium nitrite acts as a source of exogenous NO, especially under hypoxic or acidic conditions, and can promote vasodilation and increase blood flow to tissues[1][4][10]. This combination has been studied in clinical research settings to investigate the interplay between NOS inhibition and exogenous NO donation, particularly for understanding vascular function and blood flow regulation. The combination may be used experimentally to dissect the roles of endogenous versus exogenous NO in various disease models but does not have established therapeutic use as a fixed-dose pharmaceutical product.
