L-NMMA + trimethaphan is an experimental combination of two pharmacological agents used primarily in research settings to investigate the role of nitric oxide (NO) in blood pressure regulation and autonomic function. L-NMMA (NG-monomethyl-L-arginine) is a competitive inhibitor of nitric oxide synthase, thereby reducing endogenous NO production and causing vasoconstriction and increased blood pressure. Trimethaphan is a ganglionic blocker that inhibits transmission at autonomic ganglia by antagonizing neuronal acetylcholine receptors, resulting in complete autonomic blockade. When administered together, this combination allows researchers to assess the contribution of NO to vascular tone without interference from baroreflex-mediated compensatory mechanisms[1][4][3]. This approach has been used in clinical studies examining differences in NO-mediated blood pressure regulation among different populations.
