Drug intelligence / Profile preview
HEPAHENZ is a nutraceutical liver support formulation developed by Miotic Pharmaceuticals, containing l-ornithine l-aspartate (LOLA) as its active ingredient. LOLA is a stable salt of the natural amino acids ornithine and aspartic acid, which plays a crucial role in the detoxification of ammonia in the liver and brain. The mechanism of action involves the stimulation of the urea cycle, where ornithine serves as a substrate for ornithine carbamoyltransferase and carbamoyl-phosphate synthase, and the activation of glutamine synthesis, where aspartate is utilized by glutamine synthetase. By facilitating the conversion of toxic ammonia into urea and glutamine, HEPAHENZ helps manage hyperammonemia and its complications, such as hepatic encephalopathy, in patients with chronic liver diseases like cirrhosis and fatty liver.
