Overview

**Lactated Ringer's solution** is a sterile, isotonic balanced crystalloid for intravenous fluid and electrolyte replacement. Standard U.S. Lactated Ringer's Injection contains sodium chloride, sodium lactate, potassium chloride, and calcium chloride; typical electrolyte concentrations per liter are sodium 130 mEq, potassium 4 mEq, calcium 3 mEq, chloride approximately 109 to 110 mEq, and lactate 28 mEq. It expands extracellular and intravascular volume while replenishing electrolytes; metabolizable lactate provides an alkalinizing effect through conversion to bicarbonate. It is used for fluid resuscitation and treatment of dehydration, extracellular fluid losses, electrolyte depletion, and selected acid-base disturbances. The calcium-containing solution has important compatibility limitations, including avoidance of concomitant ceftriaxone administration in neonates.
