Overview

Lactobacillus acidophilus (Tanta University) is a live biotherapeutic product being investigated as an adjunctive therapy for children with drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE). Developed by Tanta University, this probiotic is administered orally. Clinical studies suggest that gut microbial imbalance (dysbiosis) may be a causative factor in epilepsy. This therapy aims to restore the equilibrium of the gut microbiota. A Phase 2 clinical trial showed that supplementation with Lactobacillus acidophilus significantly reduced seizure frequency and improved quality of life in pediatric patients with DRE. The mechanism is believed to involve the reduction of systemic inflammation, as evidenced by decreased serum levels of inflammatory markers such as HMGB1, NLRP3, and IL-1β. Preclinical models also suggest that Lactobacillus probiotics may influence brain function through the modulation of GABA.
