Overview
**Lactobacillus acidophilus LA-5 + Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis BB-12** is a defined two-strain oral probiotic mixture historically supplied by Chr. Hansen as **Probio-Tec AB-25**. It is a live microbial therapy intended to modulate intestinal microbial ecology and host mucosal immune responses. In a randomized, placebo-controlled 52-week study in left-sided ulcerative colitis, the capsule formulation was well tolerated but did not demonstrate a statistically significant benefit over placebo for maintenance of clinical remission. The same strain combination has also been evaluated in non-constipated irritable bowel syndrome and in fermented-milk interventions for metabolic and microbiome-related outcomes.
