Overview

Lactobacillus brevis + Lactobacillus plantarum is a combination probiotic mixture being investigated as a local delivery drug for the management of Stage III Grade C periodontitis (molar-incisor pattern). Developed by researchers at Al-Azhar University, the treatment is administered as an intra-pocket formula following scaling and root planing (SRP). The probiotic strains work by colonizing the periodontal pocket, competing with pathogenic bacteria for nutrients and adhesion sites, and producing antimicrobial substances. This microbial therapy aims to restore a healthy subgingival microbiome and reduce clinical markers of periodontal disease such as pocket depth and attachment loss.
