Overview

Lactobacillus casei + Lactobacillus rhamnosus is a probiotic combination consisting of two species of gram-positive, lactic acid-producing bacteria belonging to the Lactobacillaceae family. These organisms are classified as live biotherapeutic products (LBPs) and are widely utilized to restore and maintain microbial homeostasis in the human gastrointestinal and urogenital tracts. The combination exerts its effects through several distinct pathways: competitive exclusion of pathogenic bacteria by occupying mucosal adhesion sites, the production of antimicrobial substances such as bacteriocins and organic acids (e.g., lactic acid) that lower luminal pH, and the reinforcement of the intestinal epithelial barrier via the upregulation of tight junction proteins. Furthermore, these strains modulate host immunity by interacting with toll-like receptors on intestinal epithelial and dendritic cells, promoting the secretion of anti-inflammatory cytokines and enhancing secretory IgA production. This combination is primarily indicated for the management of antibiotic-associated diarrhea, infectious diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and the prevention of vaginal dysbiosis.
