Overview

Lactobacillus fermentum + acacia gum is a synbiotic combination comprising the probiotic bacterium *Lactobacillus fermentum* and the prebiotic fiber acacia gum (also known as gum arabic). This combination is primarily investigated for its metabolic health benefits, specifically its ability to lower serum cholesterol levels. The mechanism of action is centered on the production of bile salt hydrolase (BSH) by the *L. fermentum* strain (notably NCIMB 5221). BSH deconjugates bile salts in the small intestine, which reduces their reabsorption and increases fecal excretion. To compensate for the loss of bile acids, the liver utilizes circulating cholesterol to synthesize new bile salts, thereby lowering systemic cholesterol levels. Acacia gum acts as a selective prebiotic substrate that enhances the survival, growth, and metabolic activity of the probiotic bacteria while promoting a favorable modulation of the gut microbiota. Clinical research, including randomized controlled trials, has demonstrated the efficacy of this synbiotic in reducing total and LDL cholesterol in hypercholesterolemic individuals.
