Overview

This is a combination of the probiotic bacterium Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG) and the iron-binding glycoprotein lactoferrin (LF), often derived from bovine or human sources. The combination is primarily used as a prophylactic dietary supplement in preterm infants to enhance gut defenses and reduce the incidence of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) and late-onset sepsis (LOS). LGG acts by colonizing the gut with beneficial bacteria, thereby inhibiting pathogenic organisms and modulating immune responses. Lactoferrin exerts antimicrobial effects by binding free iron needed for bacterial growth, directly disrupting microbial membranes, and modulating host immunity. Together, they have been shown to synergistically reduce invasive Escherichia coli infection in animal models and lower NEC rates in clinical studies involving preterm infants[1][2][4]. This combination is not an FDA-approved pharmaceutical but is widely used as a dietary supplement or hospital-administered prophylaxis.
