Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Lactobacillus reuteri (often misspelled as L. retueri) is a probiotic bacterium. A specific formulation containing two strains of L. reuteri, DSM 17938 and ATCC PTA 5289, has been developed and studied by the University of Copenhagen (Department of Odontology, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences) and BioGaia. Administered as a daily oral lozenge or tablet, this probiotic targets the oral microbiome to inhibit cariogenic bacteria, such as Streptococcus mutans, which contribute to enamel demineralization and dental caries. Clinical trials, including those using quantitative light-induced fluorescence (QLF) to measure enamel mineral loss, have investigated its efficacy in children and adolescents with white spot lesions. The formulation is commercially marketed under the brand name BioGaia Prodentis.
