Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Lactobacillus reuteri + Bifidobacterium bifidum is a combination of two probiotic bacterial strains. Probiotics are live microorganisms that, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host. This specific combination is being investigated for its therapeutic effects, particularly in neonatal conditions like bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). The proposed mechanism involves modulation of the gut-lung axis, where altering the gut microbiota can influence systemic inflammation and immune responses. A study on a BPD cell model showed that this combination promoted cell proliferation, inhibited apoptosis, and reduced inflammation and oxidative stress. Both Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium species are known to have immunomodulatory properties, including enhancing the gut barrier, producing antimicrobial substances, and influencing cytokine production.
