Overview

This is an investigational combination therapy consisting of the probiotic strain *Lactobacillus reuteri* DSM 17938 and vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol). Developed by the University of Campania Luigi Vanvitelli, it is being evaluated as an ancillary treatment for children with mild to moderate persistent asthma. The combination aims to reduce bronchial inflammation and improve asthma control through the immunomodulatory effects of the probiotic and the anti-inflammatory properties of vitamin D3. *L. reuteri* DSM 17938 is a well-studied strain that colonizes the gastrointestinal tract and modulates the immune system via the gut-lung axis, while cholecalciferol acts as a Vitamin D receptor agonist. The therapy is administered as oral drops and is currently being studied in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled Phase 3 trial.
