Drug intelligence / Profile preview
This multi-strain synbiotic preparation is an oral live biotherapeutic product (LBP) designed for the treatment of diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D). It consists of five specific probiotic strains—*Lactobacillus rhamnosus* FloraActive™ 19070-2, *Lactobacillus acidophilus* DSMZ 32418, *Bifidobacterium lactis* DSMZ 32269, *Bifidobacterium longum* DSMZ 32946, and *Bifidobacterium bifidum* DSMZ 32403—formulated with the prebiotic fructooligosaccharides (FOS). Developed by Novozymes, the product aims to modulate the gut microbiome to restore microbial balance, enhance intestinal barrier function, and reduce symptoms such as flatulence and irregular bowel habits. In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled Phase 2 trial (NCT04206410), the synbiotic significantly improved global IBS symptoms and reduced the severity of flatulence in adult patients over an eight-week treatment period.
