Overview

Lactobacillus rhamnosus GR-1 + Lactobacillus reuteri RC-14 is a specific probiotic combination developed to support and restore the female urogenital microbiome. The two strains were originally isolated from the distal urethra and vagina of healthy women by researchers Gregor Reid and Andrew Bruce at Western University. *L. rhamnosus* GR-1 is known for its ability to colonize the vaginal tract and inhibit the adhesion of uropathogens, while *L. reuteri* RC-14 (formerly classified as *L. fermentum*) produces biosurfactants and hydrogen peroxide that disrupt pathogen biofilms. Together, they work by lowering vaginal pH through lactic acid production and competing with pathogenic bacteria such as *Gardnerella vaginalis*, *Escherichia coli*, and *Candida* species. The combination is widely used as an oral or vaginal intervention for bacterial vaginosis, yeast vaginitis, and the prevention of recurrent urinary tract infections.
