lactoferrin + ferrous sulfate is a combination therapy investigated by Assiut University for the treatment of iron deficiency anemia (IDA), particularly in pediatric populations. This regimen combines bovine lactoferrin, a mammalian cationic iron-binding glycoprotein, with ferrous sulfate, a traditional oral iron supplement. Lactoferrin is thought to enhance iron absorption by binding ferric iron and interacting with specific receptors, such as the lactoferrin receptor, in the intestinal brush border. Additionally, lactoferrin possesses anti-inflammatory properties that may help sequester iron from pathogens and reduce the gastrointestinal side effects often associated with high-dose iron salts. Ferrous sulfate provides a direct source of elemental iron to replenish systemic stores. The combination is being evaluated in Phase 4 clinical trials to determine if it provides superior efficacy in improving hemoglobin and ferritin levels compared to iron salt monotherapy.
