Lactoferrin + iron is a combination of the iron-binding glycoprotein lactoferrin and supplemental iron, typically used to address or prevent iron deficiency and related anemia. Lactoferrin, found in mammalian milk and other bodily fluids, acts as an iron chelator—binding two ferric (Fe3+) ions per molecule—and regulates intestinal absorption of dietary iron. This combination leverages lactoferrin’s ability to enhance antioxidant capacity, modulate immune responses (notably cytokine activity), and improve the efficiency of oral or injected iron supplementation. Studies suggest that combining oral lactoferrin with an injectable or oral form of supplemental iron can more effectively increase serum ferritin, hemoglobin levels, red blood cell count, and overall antioxidant status compared to either agent alone[1][3]. The mechanism involves upregulation of the lactoferrin receptor (LFR) gene expression in the gut for improved absorption while reducing oxidative stress associated with free unbound supplemental iron[1][4][6]. This combination is primarily indicated for prevention or treatment of various forms of anemia—including pregnancy-related anemia—and may also support immune function.
