Lactoperoxidase + thiocyanate + hydrogen peroxide (LPO-system) is an enzymatic antimicrobial combination delivered in lozenge form for oral hygiene. The system mimics a naturally occurring physiological defense mechanism found in saliva. Lactoperoxidase catalyzes the oxidation of thiocyanate ions by hydrogen peroxide to generate hypothiocyanous acid (HOSCN), a potent antimicrobial agent that inhibits the growth of cariogenic bacteria and reduces dental plaque formation. It has been evaluated in Phase I clinical trials by researchers at the University Medicine Greifswald for the prevention of dental plaque and caries.
