Lactulose is a synthetic disaccharide that acts as an osmotic laxative; it is not absorbed in the small intestine and is fermented by colonic bacteria into organic acids (such as lactic and acetic acids), which increase osmotic pressure and acidify the colonic contents, thereby drawing water into the intestinal lumen.
