Overview
Lambda-bis(2,2'-bipyridine)imidazole ruthenium (II) is a ruthenium(II) coordination complex under investigation for its potential therapeutic applications, primarily as an anticancer agent. This compound, and closely related ruthenium-bipyridine-imidazole complexes, have demonstrated in vitro cytotoxicity against various cancer cell lines, with some exhibiting potency comparable to cisplatin but potentially with fewer side effects. Its mechanism of action involves interactions with biological macromolecules, including DNA and its components, and proteins, leading to cellular effects such as cell cycle arrest and the induction of apoptosis. Research also explores its use in modifying proteins at histidine residues.
