laminaria + misoprostol is a combination treatment regimen used for cervical priming and dilation. It consists of Laminaria, a sterile osmotic dilator made from dried seaweed (Laminaria digitata or Laminaria japonica), and Misoprostol, a synthetic prostaglandin E1 analog. The Laminaria tent is inserted into the cervical canal where it absorbs moisture and expands, providing slow and steady mechanical dilation. Misoprostol acts pharmacologically by binding to prostaglandin E receptors (EP2, EP3, and EP4), leading to the degradation of collagen and softening of the cervical tissue. This dual approach is particularly utilized in nulliparous women before operative hysteroscopy to prevent cervical spasm and facilitate easier access to the uterine cavity, as investigated in clinical trials at Zagazig University.
