Overview

This is a four-drug antiretroviral combination regimen consisting of lamivudine, abacavir, ritonavir, and atazanavir. It is used in the treatment of HIV-1 infection. Lamivudine and abacavir are nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) that inhibit HIV reverse transcriptase by acting as chain terminators during viral DNA synthesis. Atazanavir is a protease inhibitor that blocks the activity of the HIV protease enzyme, preventing viral protein processing and maturation; its effectiveness is enhanced when boosted with low-dose ritonavir, which inhibits CYP3A-mediated metabolism to increase atazanavir plasma levels[1][8]. This combination has been shown to be effective and well-tolerated in ART-naïve patients over 48 weeks[1]. The regimen targets multiple steps in the HIV replication cycle for durable viral suppression.
