Overview

Lamivudine + peginterferon alfa-2b is a combination therapy used primarily in the treatment of chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. Lamivudine is a synthetic nucleoside analogue that acts as a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI), inhibiting viral DNA synthesis by incorporating into viral DNA and causing chain termination. Peginterferon alfa-2b is a pegylated recombinant interferon that binds to type 1 interferon receptors, activating the JAK/STAT pathway and inducing antiviral gene expression. The combination has been studied for both HBeAg-positive and HBeAg-negative chronic hepatitis B, but evidence suggests it does not provide superior efficacy compared to peginterferon alfa-2b monotherapy[4][5]. Both drugs are also individually approved for other indications: lamivudine for HIV and HBV, and peginterferon alfa-2b for hepatitis C and melanoma[1][6][7].
