Overview

Lamivudine + zidovudine + atazanavir is a three-drug antiretroviral regimen used in the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. This combination includes two nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs), lamivudine and zidovudine, and one protease inhibitor, atazanavir. Lamivudine and zidovudine inhibit HIV reverse transcriptase by acting as chain terminators during viral DNA synthesis, thereby preventing viral replication. Atazanavir inhibits the HIV-1 protease enzyme, which is essential for the maturation of infectious virus particles; its inhibition results in the production of immature, non-infectious virions. This combination is not available as a single fixed-dose product but may be prescribed as individual agents taken together as part of an antiretroviral therapy regimen for HIV-1 infection[4][7][8]. The primary indication is for the management of HIV-1 infection in adults and children.
