Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Lanthanum(III) cation is a rare earth metal ion with the chemical formula La³⁺. It functions as a phosphate binder and is used in biochemical research to block the activity of divalent cation channels, especially calcium channels. In clinical applications, lanthanum compounds like lanthanum carbonate are used to reduce serum phosphate levels in patients with end-stage renal disease by forming insoluble complexes with phosphate in the gastrointestinal tract, preventing its absorption.
