Lanthanum carbonate + calcitriol is a combination of two agents commonly used in the management of mineral and bone disorders in patients with chronic kidney disease, particularly those on dialysis. Lanthanum carbonate is a non-calcium-based phosphate binder that reduces serum phosphate by binding dietary phosphate in the gastrointestinal tract, thereby preventing its absorption[1][5][6]. Calcitriol is an active form of vitamin D3 that increases intestinal absorption of calcium and regulates parathyroid hormone levels to prevent secondary hyperparathyroidism and metabolic bone disease[2][3]. This combination addresses both hyperphosphatemia (via lanthanum carbonate) and hypocalcemia or secondary hyperparathyroidism (via calcitriol), which are common complications in end-stage renal disease. Co-administration does not significantly alter the pharmacokinetics of either drug, though it may delay peak serum concentrations for calcitriol[4].
