Overview

Latrodectus mactans immune globulin (equine) is an equine-derived biologic antivenom developed and marketed by Merck for the treatment of systemic symptoms of black widow spider envenomation, also known as latrodectism. It is a sterile lyophilized preparation of venom-neutralizing horse immunoglobulins raised against *Latrodectus mactans* venom, historically sold under the brand name Antivenin. The antibodies bind and neutralize black widow venom toxins, principally alpha-latrotoxin, thereby preventing toxin interaction with presynaptic nerve terminals and helping reverse the severe pain, muscle spasm, autonomic manifestations, and other systemic effects associated with envenomation. Because it is a whole equine immunoglobulin product, it carries a known risk of hypersensitivity reactions including anaphylaxis and serum sickness.
