Overview

Lecithin + physostigmine is a combination of two agents investigated primarily for their potential effects on memory and cognitive function, particularly in neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer's disease. Lecithin is a mixture of phospholipids essential to cell membrane structure and function, commonly derived from soybeans or egg yolks. It has been studied for its possible role in supporting cognitive health due to its choline content, which is a precursor to the neurotransmitter acetylcholine[6]. Physostigmine is an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor that increases levels of acetylcholine by preventing its breakdown, thereby enhancing cholinergic transmission in the central nervous system[5]. The rationale behind combining these agents was that lecithin could provide more substrate (choline) for acetylcholine synthesis while physostigmine would prevent its degradation, potentially improving memory and attention. However, clinical studies have generally shown no significant benefit from this combination compared to lecithin alone or placebo in Alzheimer's disease and related disorders[1][2].
