Drug intelligence / Profile preview
LepVax (LEP-F1 + GLA-SE) is a recombinant subunit vaccine developed for the prevention and treatment of leprosy, caused by *Mycobacterium leprae*. It consists of the LEP-F1 recombinant fusion protein, which combines three highly immunogenic *M. leprae* antigens (ML2531, ML2380, and ML2055), and the GLA-SE adjuvant (Glucopyranosyl Lipid Adjuvant in a Stable Emulsion). GLA-SE is a synthetic Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) agonist that enhances the Th1-type cellular immune response, which is essential for controlling intracellular mycobacterial infections. The vaccine is designed to provide long-term protection against infection and to potentially reduce the progression of the disease and associated nerve damage in paucibacillary and multibacillary leprosy patients. It was developed by the Infectious Disease Research Institute (IDRI), now the Advanced Access & Delivery Institute (AAHI), in collaboration with the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) and Bio-Manguinhos.
