Leukocyte-poor platelet-rich plasma (LP-PRP) is an autologous biological therapy developed by the Istituto Ortopedico Rizzoli for the treatment of knee osteoarthritis and cartilage degeneration. The preparation involves a double centrifugation process of autologous venous blood to concentrate platelets, followed by a specific filtration step to remove leukocytes. This depletion of white blood cells is intended to minimize the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines and matrix metalloproteinases that could potentially exacerbate joint inflammation. LP-PRP is administered via intra-articular injection, where the concentrated platelets release a variety of growth factors (such as PDGF, TGF-β, and VEGF) that promote tissue repair, modulate the inflammatory environment, and stimulate chondrocyte activity to improve joint function and reduce pain.
