Depo Lupron + aromatase inhibitor is a combination pharmacological intervention used primarily as a research tool in mechanistic clinical studies. It consists of Depo Lupron (leuprolide acetate), a gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) receptor agonist that suppresses the production of endogenous sex steroids (estrogen and testosterone), and an aromatase inhibitor, which blocks the peripheral conversion of androgens to estrogens. This combination is utilized to induce a state of near-complete sex hormone depletion, allowing researchers to selectively "add back" specific hormones to study their individual physiological effects. In the context of study NCT00694733, it was used to investigate the regulation of cortisol metabolism and body fat distribution in men and postmenopausal women.
