Overview
Depot Lupron + estrogen is an experimental combination regimen consisting of leuprolide acetate (brand name: Lupron Depot) and supplemental estrogen. Leuprolide is a synthetic gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist that, when administered in a depot formulation, induces a state of medical oophorectomy by suppressing the pituitary-gonadal axis and reducing endogenous production of estrogen, progesterone, and androgens. In clinical research conducted by the University of Chicago, this regimen is used to investigate the metabolic and hormonal drivers of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). By suppressing endogenous hormones and selectively adding back estrogen or progesterone, researchers can isolate the specific effects of hyperandrogenemia and hormonal dysregulation on sleep-disordered breathing and insulin resistance.
