Overview
Cognitive + Hormone is an investigational combination treatment protocol developed by the Norwegian University of Science and Technology for the management of paraphilia in sexual offenders. The treatment integrates the pharmacological administration of leuprorelin (leuprolide acetate), a synthetic gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist, with cognitive-behavioral group therapy. Leuprorelin functions by initially stimulating and subsequently downregulating GnRH receptors in the pituitary gland, which results in a profound suppression of testosterone production (chemical castration). The concurrent cognitive therapy component is designed to modify deviant sexual thoughts and cognitive distortions. This dual-modality approach aims to reduce sexual drive while simultaneously providing psychological tools to prevent recidivism.
