Overview

L-carnitine + N-acetyl cysteine is a combination antioxidant regimen consisting of levocarnitine and acetylcysteine. It has been investigated in a pilot clinical study by Ain Shams University for the treatment of male infertility, specifically targeting sperm DNA damage in adult males with beta thalassemia major (BTM). In BTM, iron overload leads to the excessive formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which causes oxidative stress and subsequent damage to the hypothalamic-pituitary-testicular axis and sperm DNA. This combination therapy aims to reduce the DNA fragmentation index and improve sperm morphology by scavenging ROS and neutralizing free radicals. The treatment is typically administered orally over a six-month period.
