Overview
Levodopa + carbidopa + ascorbic acid (LCAS), also known as citridopa, is a compounded liquid formulation used for the management of advanced Parkinson's disease, particularly in patients experiencing severe motor fluctuations ("off" periods). It consists of levodopa, a dopamine precursor; carbidopa, a peripheral aromatic L-amino acid decarboxylase inhibitor that prevents the premature breakdown of levodopa; and ascorbic acid (vitamin C), which acts as an antioxidant to stabilize the solution and potentially enhance absorption. This formulation allows for finer dose titration and more predictable clinical responses compared to standard oral tablets. It is typically prepared daily by dissolving levodopa/carbidopa tablets in water with ascorbic acid.
